Year 2 Maths Help

How is division taught
in Year 2?

Year 2 division starts with practical understanding: sharing, grouping, repeated subtraction, and links to simple times tables.

Children learn what division means before formal methods

In Year 2, division is usually introduced as sharing equally and making equal groups. For example, 12 counters can be shared between 3 children, or grouped into sets of 3.

This helps children see that division is connected to multiplication, especially the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Year 2 example
12 shared into 3 equal groups means 4 in each group.
12 grouped in 3s makes 4 groups.
3 x 4 = 12, so 12 divided by 3 = 4.

How parents can help

Use real objects

Share pasta, coins, blocks, or counters into equal groups so your child can see what division means.

Say the full sentence

Use language like "12 shared between 3 is 4 each" to make the meaning clear.

Link to times tables

Ask "What multiplication fact helps us?" so division and multiplication are connected.
