Times Tables Help

How to help with
times tables at home

Times tables improve with short, regular, low-pressure practice and clear correction when mistakes happen.

Keep practice short, specific, and consistent

Choose one times table, practise it for a few minutes, and repeat it regularly. Children need both understanding and recall, so mix arrays, counting patterns, and quick questions.

Start with patterns

For example, 5 times table answers end in 0 or 5, and 10 times table answers end in 0.

Use known facts

If your child knows 4 x 6, use it to work out 5 x 6 by adding one more 6.

Practise both directions

Ask 6 x 4 and 24 divided by 6 so multiplication and division become connected.

A simple 10 minute structure

1

Warm up

Count forwards and backwards in the table for two minutes.

2

Recall

Ask quick questions in mixed order for four minutes.

3

Apply

Use two word problems or division facts to check understanding.
