What should my Year 4 child
know in maths?
Year 4 is a key year for times tables, written methods, fractions, decimals, and problem solving.
Year 4 strengthens core KS2 foundations
A Year 4 child should be developing confidence with numbers up to 10,000, written calculation methods, multiplication and division facts, fractions, decimals, measurement, shape, and data. They should also be learning to explain their thinking in word problems.
Number and place value
Read, write, order, and compare larger numbers, and understand the value of each digit.
Times tables
Recall multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 and use them in division and problem solving.
Fractions and decimals
Recognise equivalent fractions, count in decimals, and connect tenths and hundredths to place value.
Measurement and geometry
Work with perimeter, area, angles, symmetry, coordinates, and properties of shapes.
Look for confidence, not just correct answers
If your child gets answers right but takes a very long time, they may still need fluency practice. If they rush and make repeated mistakes, they may need slower, more structured correction.
