Questions about becoming a tutor?
Understand the two pathways, what you need to apply and how supporting families works.
Applying and eligibility
How can I become an Out of School tutor?
Read the tutor requirements, choose platform support only or the combined one-to-one and platform-support pathway, and complete the application with your CV. Our team reviews your details and contacts you about onboarding and evidence checks. Applying does not guarantee approval; your account must be approved before it goes live.
I have a tuition centre. Can I join?
You can apply as an individual tutor and tell us about your centre in the cover note. If you want several tutors to join, contact the team to discuss the arrangement first. Each person teaching needs their own approved identity, permissions and applicable checks; one person's approval does not cover the whole centre.
I am already a teacher. Can I apply?
Yes, you can apply and describe your teaching experience, subjects and primary year groups. Existing teaching experience does not automatically grant platform or lesson access; the same application, identity and applicable safeguarding review is required.
I am currently a university student. Can I apply?
You can submit an application for review and explain your current course, relevant experience and the subjects you can support. Student status does not guarantee approval. Do not invent a completed qualification or graduation year: use the cover note to explain an ongoing course. The combined pathway asks for your highest qualification, subject and awarding institution; the qualification year is optional.
Do I need to have my own students already?
You can describe how you plan to build your student base when applying. Independent tutors bring and manage their own families. Approved one-to-one tutors can also receive online lesson bookings from families with a platform plan, but we do not guarantee pupils, bookings or income.
Can I apply from outside the UK?
The current application is for UK residents with the right to work in the UK. Both tutor pathways require identity, right-to-work and proof-of-address checks before approval.
Pathways and required checks
What is the difference between the two pathways?
Platform Access / Progress Plus support-only tutors manage home learning, review progress and provide the parent meetings included in Progress Plus. They cannot offer or deliver one-to-one lessons. Approved combined-pathway tutors can do both platform support and online one-to-one lessons and must meet both sets of requirements.
What documents do both pathways need?
Both need full identity verification, right-to-work evidence and proof of address. Complete the application first; the team will explain the secure document process. Additional safeguarding checks depend on duties and contact with children.
What extra checks are needed for one-to-one tuition?
The combined pathway also requires the applicable DBS and safeguarding checks and review of qualifications and experience before lessons start. Declaring your DBS status on the form is not the same as having your evidence checked and approved. The team confirms the complete requirements during onboarding.
Can I offer SEND tuition?
Choose the combined pathway and select SEND interest on the form. Describe your relevant training, experience and the needs you can support. SEND suitability is reviewed separately; selecting the option does not automatically approve you. Do not include private details about children in your application.
Can I switch from platform support to one-to-one later?
Contact the team to request review for the combined pathway. Complete the additional checks and wait for approval before offering lessons. Platform-support-only approval does not permit one-to-one teaching.
Working with families and earnings
What do Platform Access and Progress Plus include?
Platform Access is £30/month for home learning and parent progress visibility. Progress Plus is £45/month and includes two parent progress meetings each month. Independent tutors provide the included meetings for their own families; the Out of School team provides them for platform families.
What are the planned tutor payment shares?
Parents already pay Out of School directly and tutors no longer pay a tutor bill; the earnings shares are being prepared and are not active yet. The agreed tutor share for your own student's subscription is 70%: £21 from £30 or £31.50 from £45. The platform share is 30%. Standard one-hour lessons cost £30, split £24 tutor / £6 platform. SEND one-hour lessons cost £40, split £32 tutor / £8 platform. Processing fees come from the platform share. Applicable terms, refunds and payout arrangements are confirmed before launch; this page does not change existing agreements.
Can my own families book another tutor?
It depends on your pathway. If you are an approved one-to-one tutor, families who join through your link can book lessons only with you. If you are a platform-support-only tutor, you cannot teach one-to-one, so your families can book an approved listed one-to-one tutor; the child stays your student for the subscription. Families who sign up through Out of School or an agent link can book any approved listed one-to-one tutor. A lesson booking does not transfer ownership of the student's subscription.
Will parents pay me directly?
No. Since 2 November 2026 parents pay Out of School directly, by card or bank transfer to Green Business Tools Ltd, and tutors no longer subscribe students or pay a tutor bill. Tutor earnings statements and payouts are being prepared and will be confirmed before they start.
Is this a salaried teaching job?
This is an independent tutor opportunity, not an employment application or a promise of a salary. Read the tutor information and discuss the applicable agreement with the team before starting.
What happens after I apply?
We review the application, contact you and arrange the applicable checks and onboarding. Submitting does not guarantee approval. If you already applied with the same email, the form will tell you when an open application exists. Contact the team if you need help with your application.
